A fearful Empire anticipates King Akira's next move will he abandon them to the corrupt hands of Caerwyn Martel or doom them to bloody civil war, leaving them defenseless against an imminent alien invasion?

Just beyond human space, the crows are circling. Across the DMZ, the Rotham Republic prepares its war fleets with hungry eyes fixed on the weakened Empire. Spurred on to war by the pervasive Rahajiim, a shadowy organization that has struck a dark deal with the nightmarish Enclave.

Meanwhile Summers races to destroy the rest of the isotome weapons before they are used, Nimoux struggles to escape an unlikely prison planet, Shen copes with his strange new life, and Calvin hunts for the true puppetmaster. Desperate to discover the deepest layer of the conspiracy before it's too late. And in the shadows behind it all, Blackmoth brews a storm of chaos, hell-bent on subjecting the galaxy to the dark design of his One-True-God.

The Phoenix War The Phoenix Conspiracy Series Book 4 eBook Richard Sanders

This review is intended to cover all four books to this point in this series. I don't plan on buying the fifth should there be one. The simple fact is that even with the discount on book 1 the series is over priced for what it provides. The stories move to slowly. There is too much repetition. The main characters too easily get lost and diverted. Only the "good" guys make extraordinarily poor decisions (repeatedly). The mysterious subplot takes far to long to develop. The entire story, including whatever is planned for book five, could and should have been presented in three books. In fairness the construction of the stories are well done. There are few, very few, editing errors or grammatical issues to jar the reader out of the story. What is needed is better editing to tighten up the writing.

Vampires, zombies, werewolves, an as yet explained subspecies of a major alien race (which was introduced more than a book ago), an unstoppable assassin with boundless resources are all to much. The greater sin is that once the hero is in position to actually save the empire he fails (more than once) to take the most obvious actions. The plot requires this otherwise Calvin would have resolved this long ago.

Rather than drop an actual spoiler into this review I'll ask a simple question. With the fate of the empire and billions of lives hanging in the balance why would Calvin allow an artificial protocol to prevent him from proving before the entire assembly the existence of replacements at the highest levels of the military?

In WWII the American military did not commit to the defense of Midway until they had confirmed it was to be the next target of the Japanese fleet because it was too risky otherwise. Given the existence of stealth ships would the military on both sides not take similar precautions in implementing the orders of their leadership?

Mr. Sanders is a skillful writer, and had me hooked well enough so that I bought book four despite my better judgement. I was hopeful that he'd tie things up, but he simply strings things out and us along.

I really wish I could give this series a 2.5. Certainly books three and four failed to deliver on the promise of the first two.

The Phoenix War The Phoenix Conspiracy Series Book 4 eBook Richard Sanders Reviews

Book 4 was a fun read and had errors throughout. The author changed the plot a little and added a new character that is more zealot than anything. It makes the reading drone on and becomes boring in places. The overall story has progressed well and keeps my interest for the most part.
What actually happens in this book to move the story / plot ahead? Not much of anything and I tell all readers, simply skip this book, you won't miss anything other than a lot of filler.
I have read all of the Phoenix series and have loved them all. I'm very impressed to see such excellent writing and story telling from such a young author or any author for that matter. The story is complex but is easy to follow which is pretty amazing because there are a lot of threads that are important and he weaves them in a way that you don't get lost. The storyline is a combination of intrigue, aliens invasion and war. The twist and turns are easy to follow but complex. I'm not easily impressed and I am very, very picky (my husband says anal). There are plenty of books that would have been returned or deleted if it weren't for my husbands lack of taste. I would "buy" the first in this series as it is free and you will be hooked. Looking forward to the next.
Literally nearly nothing happens in this book and all for $7.

All of the writing is boring and drags. Do yourself a favor and read my two sentence summary and skip this book in this series.

Nimoux breaks out of prison but everyone else dies and Summers saves him with the Nighthawk. Meanwhile Calvin takes a ship to the DMZ then to Rotham space to discover the Alliance is dealing with Rotham and they have access to the Imperial worlds and Khalili launches a failed attack on a military space ship yards (the Apollo) and much of the human fleet is decimated.

As I have said before, the author has a degree in economics.
I have absolutely become engrossed in this well-plotted, action-filled story of a conspiracy that encompasses the known galaxy and involves human and alien species alike. Readers discover a lot more about the interactions between the Pheonix Ring, the Enclave and the Rotham and how much each group were manipulating situations to their own (as they think) advantage - the Enclave in particular played both sides by keeping control of the isotome weapons, offering them to the Rotham and Pheonix Ring respectively. Much of the story switches from the POV of four of the main characters Calvin and his group take a Rotham cargo ship into Alliance and Rotham space looking for signs of the Rotham Fleet preparing to move into Imperial space; Queen Kalila and her task force prepare for inevitable battle with Caerwyn Martel (now Steward of the Empire) and his fleet; former Intel Wing operative, Captain Nimoux tries to find a way to escape his prison and bring word out about the Replicants; and Summers and the Nighthawk continue to look for the remaining isotome weapons. Once again, Richard Sanders has given us a brilliant story that has multiple layers - there are the machinations of the Enclave, Rotham, and the Pheonix Ring, but the overarching conspiracy is that of the One True God whom we (the reader) have heard mentioned but no one else (i.e. the characters, other than Blackmoth and the Replicants) even knows about. I like the characters - they are complex, well-developed and flawed Calvin the former Intel Wing operative has battled addiction and grief; Rain, the young doctor who has a terminal disease and uses optimism to enjoy the remaining years she has; Shen who, while he has recovered from the attack of the Stigori on Remus, remains in fear that he is no longer human; the affable, but annoying Miles; Summers Presley who is a dedicated and by the book officer - of course there are many more but to describe them in a few words would make for a long review. A highly recommended read.
